In my opinion Norton has become more and more bloated. I stopped using it a while ago. Many of my friends have done the same after experiencing slowdowns and unexplained system upsets. My recommendation is to uninstall it when your subscription expires.

I have heard good things about BitDefender.

For home use, you can get good anti-virus at no cost. I have used Avast on all my computers for a year or two now. It is reliable, unobtrusive, doesn't screw up your system, updates automatically and is free for home use. http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html . Highly recommended.

Make sure the Windows Firewall is on. Find it in the Control Panel.

I stopped using Norton several years ago. I ran AVG anti-virus for a couple of years, and installed it on my mother's and other friends' machines - to good effect. However I too have switched to Avast - it is more automated so now my mother's machine is automatically updated, rather than seriously out of date because she doesn't understand / bother to update.

I quit using Norton a long time ago. The program was so-so and took too much resources not to mention it doesn't really FULLY uninstall!

I've used F-Secure Internet Security for a few years with good results, and just recently changed over to Zone Alarm Internet Security. Both of these are very good and you can order them online, since sometimes HK doesn't have all the other good antivirus products around.

I also agree with both axptguy and ldldjr above in using Avast, or something like Avira (check out other free antivirus software in download.com) since they're free and seem to do the job. But you still need a good firewall apart from the one that comes with your Windows. Zone Alarm firewall is also free and is one of the best.

Here's the link (hope Ed won't mind):

I agree with the above comments, I also heard and read good reviews about Avast.

What you need is also a good firewall and if you keep few rules when using the internet then you will be fine. Never open any file with the ending of "xxx.exe" or "xxx.zip" if you dont know exactly what it is. You can actually get a file like that from people that you know or on msn chat, it simply means they have a bug which spread itself by sending itself inside a message or mail counting on th fact that you trust your friends and you will open it. Your friends do not even know they have it or that they are sending it.

another point is to stay away from porn sites hehehehehe
