Teaching in Hong Kong? Help!!

ORIGINAL POST

Hey everyone! I'm new here and I'm set to start my teaching next week but there is a problem. My job is paying me 18,000HK (which i believe is about 20,000US) and i've been told all week that I'm being cheated out. I am a degree holder and was wondering if any fellow teachers or employers could give me advice on this. Thank you all of your time.

P.S. this is my first teaching job besides my work in the states.

Where/what kind of teaching? The civil service master pay scale is used to calculate salaries for teachers working in schools. Primary teachers without teaching experience start on a fairly low step (around 14) and move up the scale as they gain experience. On the other hand, tutorial centres pay much less, and some International Schools have a different pay scale alltogether.

The master pay scale is at http://www.csb.gov.hk/english/admin/pay/42.html

if you have teaching exp. in the US, i would think that is a bit on the low side. is it a contract with a local school? any housing allowance, return flight home after contract? 18k is basically the local starting rate with non of these perks. you'll be okay with that salary if you are single or have no kids and flat share. why not play out the contract, see how you like HK, (some don't) and then look for an intl school job. don't get caught up in the expat salary vs local debate...you'll often hear "most people survive here on less than 10k per month blah blah blah..what isn't mentioned is that they live in 350sq ft with 6 other family members in govt. subsidizes housing which is not available to or desired by expats
