Shuttle bus?

Hi,

Are there any companies in HK that proved private airport shuttle busses? That is, you pay them to come pick you up and take you where you like?

Similiar to this:

Thanks.

You mean like a shared shuttle that makes stops for all the pax as needed? Not sure actually. Taxis in HK tend to be cheaper than what those things cost in, say, the US anyway.

For one on one service (no multiple stop arrangement) there are several, for example Farrington Amex.

Hi,

To be clear I want to hire a private van to pick us up from the airport and take us to our serviced apartment. The reason the bus, taxi or train isnt acceptable is because there will be 6 of us (3 adults and 3 kids) plus at least two pieces of luggage each.

That's too much for one taxi and the bus/train don't take us door to door. So figured a van (or equivalent) would be best.

My wife hired a van through a local company last week to take two adults and three children from the airport to Stanley. In addition to the normal luggage, she also had three car seats and three strollers. Driver was professional, driving a fairly new passenger van, and helped load and unload all the luggage (often can't even get a cab driver to help with loading/unloading luggage).

We were able to book beforehand, and driver was there waiting for a 5 am arrival in HK. Cost was $750.00HKD, not much more than Airport Express and two taxis required would have been. I'll get the info from my wife and PM the name and details rather than post them here as it may be deleted.

There are other companies, as well as a few people hanging out at the airport that may be cheaper. However, the guy hanging out at the airport probably isn't licenced, and may have a cargo van type of vehicle.

Follow-up question. Since I will be have a 5 year old a 3 year old and 3 month old with me what are the rules for things like baby-seats and booster seats etc in HK?

Sent you a PM. My wife also mentioned that the driver installed the three car seats for her.

See this link for rules on kids and car seats:

http://www.roadsafety.gov.hk/eng/dnload/leaflets/seatbelt_leaflet.pdf

Basically, it has a lot of recommendations on using car seats, but it seems the only time an approved child restraint is actually required is when a child two or under sits in the front seat. A little vague as it says seatbelts must be worn if available, but you obviously can't put a baby in a seatbelt and a carseat in the back doesn't seem to be mandatory.

Wow those carrycot rules are totally soft and vague. That's just inviting accident. Better than baby in lap but only barely.

solomani, lots of people let their kids roam free in the car. While it may be legal, it is not a very safe thing to do. If you want real safety, check regulations in the US or Western Europe and apply those.

Hi AXPTGUY,

The reason I ask was exactly because I know many Asian countries are not strict with these types of laws. Knowing the law will let me gauge what I can expect from the shuttle bus company.

For example Australia has stringent rules for babies/toddlers so when I call the Australian taxi/shuttle service they are obligated to provide baby seats. While it sounds like in HK they wont be so its something I need to ask about.

Thanks for the replies all.

I see. Well, the company won't care much how your kids are sitting/lying as long as they don't disturb the driver. Unrestrained in the back seat is a common sight unfortunately.

Some companies do provide car seats. As you say you'll have to ask. We typically bring our own.
