do you "need" an international drivers license to drive in phuket?? i've been getting mixed reports.... please advise!

I have just returned from Phuket and there are loads of police stops around Phuket now doing spot checks on vehicles and asking for their driving licences. My friend from HK got stopped and got fined for not having it on her and had to go down to the police station.

thanks for the info! but do you know specifically whether they (the police) are looking for an INTERNATIONAL drivers license or any drivers license is okay?

I have looked up in a book about thailand and a licence from your home country is valid for 3mths in thailand.

We rented a car in Phuket in Jan, and both myself and my husband drove it on our HK licence.
