Tokyo on business - etiquette/tips

ORIGINAL POST

I am traveling to Tokyo on business and would very much appreciate any tips;

What basic Japanese phrases would I need?

Dress code for females?

Any essential etiquette tips?

What would be most helpful to make me look as if I have been there before and know "my way around" rather than obvious Gweipo.

Thanks

i can give you one tip. when you take the train or bus from the airport to the city, you are not meant to talk!! (on your mobile phone). some people don't know this and talk loudly on their phones wondering why everything seems so quiet! :)

hi

go buy a phrase book that has cultural tips. be aware of the pecking order of those you are with and let others above you make suggestions and agree with the ones they make. will not hurt to be on the more conservative side with dress. you are a gaijing no guailo now.

i lived there for four years and sued to speak japanese so i do know a little.

good luck!

Japanese consider business cards important. You should receive them with both hands, place them on the table in front of you while you are talking, never write anything on it in front of them. Address them with Mr /Ms if not family name followed by san. Have a great time. From Japanese living in Beijing..
