Head Lice

Hi

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but I thought I would try.

My daughter has head lice and I am getting very frustrated because I can't seem to find very many products to help get rid of them here in HK. The only thing I was able to find that is supposed to kill them is Quellada but my daughter is under 2 and I'm not sure if I should use it on her. The only other products I could find are for repelling the lice not killing or getting rid of them.

The other thing I would like to find is a decent nit comb that will actually help to remove the lice and nits. So far I have had to do it manually without a comb and it is very difficult with such a young child. I got rid of most of them but there always seem to be more eggs whenever I check her hair!

If anyone knows where I can find some good products or has any advice on how to get rid of the nits I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Hi, I know tea tree oil is supposed to be good and there is a health shop that sells it and it's supposed to be fantastic. I will try to find out more and let you know.

Otherwise, I go to pharmacyonline.com.au and buy all my products online from Australia that i know i can't get here. Costs a bit more, but saves me a lot of hassle. Like decent kids toothpaste without all the crap and flavouring in it!! You would definitely be able to get head lice treatment from there.

Hi neenib

Thank you so much for your response. It was very useful! I have ordered some products from pharmacyonline and I am sure I will use them a lot in the future.

I usually stock up on all the products I think I will need when we go back to Australia but now I won't need to!

Thanks again.

Hi zara's mum, no problem at all. If you need a quick fix i have just found the information:

1. Soaking the hair in lemon juice kill the eggs.

2. Add tea tree oil to “jade” tea tree oil shampoo available from Green Concepts Co

Ltd at Causeway Bay, kills the head lice. (telephone 2882 4848)

If you can't get certain products at pharmacyonline, you can use pharmacydirect.com.au, they are another good company who have been around forever. But generally if you need a product and pharmacyonline don't have it, just email them, and usually they can get it in for you. They really are great.

i think tea tree oil is available in body shop.

do take care with the lemon juice though, it might be a bit harsh on an infant's scalp.

I recommend cutting your wee one's hair really short. It is so much easier! Make sure you have treated her clothes and bedding. Figure out where she is putting her hat, coat or resting her head out in public/school/daycare/home. She will keep getting reinfected if you haven't. I used to use a piece of masking tape to look through hair with...you can stick the little buggers with it and they won't get away. Good luck!

Thank you all for the great advice.

Ruth using masking tape is a fantastic idea and I will definitely try it if they come back.

I think I have been quite lucky - I seem to have successfully killed/removed them (mainly by going through the hair and picking them out manually!). I have been checking my daughter's hair at least every second day to make sure there is nothing there and so far I have seen no further sign.
