Has anyone fed their toddles with the instant oatmeal by Quaker's? I'm going travelling with my 19mths old and would like to still give him his oatmeal in the morning.
just worried because it's instant and i am always cautious about instant stuff.
thanks

No problem, even before 1 year, for either of our kids. I don't think the "Instant" label should scare you off in this case. As I understand it the only difference is a finer cut for faster cooking.
I don't know about the proportions on the tin but I use the easy to remember 2 parts water, 1 part oatmeal and a pinch of salt. Cook on medium heat until you get the desired consistency.
Try it with some (American style) apple sauce and milk. A fave.

does pouring hot boiling water into the oatmeal work as well? as i am unlikely to have a cooker with me.
Separately, does anyone have good recommendations for a portable cooker?

i would try a few brands out to see which one works - some of them i seem to remember say that you can just stir hot water in - however the couple that i tried did not seem to come up with a good result - so had to stick it in microwave anyway. Places like Olivers and City Super have a few different brands

Not as well, because it takes a while for the oats to absorb it, but if you stir vigorously I'm sure it would work reasonably.

If you are staying at hotels, getting hot water is normally not a problem.

i've always just poured hot water and it works just fine. you just have to wait a little while for the oats to absorb the water. but in any case, you have to wait for it to cool down anyway.

axptguy, i am actually also looking to buy a portable cooker for trips where hygiene and food are not desirable for toddlers.
so if anyone has good suggestion for a mini/portable cooker suitable for small scale cooking ,would appreciate your advice. thanks

Ah I see Germaine WS. However if you boil bottled water it doesn't matter where you go in the world. It will be more than clean enough for a baby/toddler. I have been in some pretty gnarly places but bottled water and somewhere to heat it have never been an issue.

I cook Quaker instant oatmeal in the microwave and it comes out great. Two and a half minutes for half a cup of dry oatmeal with one cup of milk.
