Hiring "legal" staff?

Can some advise me please how I can check if prospective staff are legally allowed to work?

Is there a special code to check on the HKID?

At this time I donot want to sponsor, but rather hire people that are either local or already have the necessary paperwork. What do I need to look out for?

For instance one applicant advises me they have "right of abode" this to my mind may not be the same as the legal visa to work. Your thoughts?

If someone has a HKID card am I correct to think this does not automatically entitle them to work?

The short answer is: ask to see the HKID card. Anyone who is illegal will not have one.

"and 2nd if he/she has an ID card printed on it "HONG KONG IDENTITY CARD" u will have to apply for a work visa for him/her and then only can they work for you"

Not necessarily, if they are on a depandant visa then no work visa required.

Just to let others know.....

According to HKInvest if the HKID card has "Right of abode" on the reverse then the person can work anywhere anytime.

However of course there are exceptions to this rule such as a Dependent Visas.

Simply having a HKID card is not enough for many of us we are entitled only to work for the company that sponsors and no other.
