I am a Police Officer in California but do not like my job so I am entering a master's program in TESOL so I can get a job teaching English in Hong Kong. Here are my 2 questions:
1. Will my law enforcement training alone make me marketable for other types of jobs other than English teaching? Keeping in mind that I don't speak Chinese.
2. Is is possible to get a career in the English teaching field and retire in HK without problems? I ask because I seek a career in HK.

It might. There certainly is a market for protection and guard services. Every other building seems to have plenty of guards. said that, HK is much "safer" than California. Guards tend to be more traffic cop/information than actual protection. I don't know if this means the more "intense" police skills (SWAT training and such) are more or less in demand. On the one hand they are used less, on the other hand they may be less known and consultants are needed.
You would have to learn decent spoken Cantonese I think. But that's not a huge problem. In 6-12 months you can be quite fluent if you study a reasonable amount.
Note that since Cantonese is the language spoken here, few people call the language "Chinese". The language spoken in "mainland" China is referred to as Mandarin.

also, what are your reasons for wanting to retire here - is it quality of life? Remember that the city is very poluted and of course as anywhere, unless you have good amount of money set aside - the quality of life is pretty much the same as anywhere.
We personally love living here but we certainly would not retire in HK, will do a few years and go home..

As it happens, I know someone that has a recruiting company for international security jobs. It covers most of the world. If you are interested, check out the site: http://www.ogmglobal.com/
Quite a few people here (South Africa) with police/security training get international jobs through him. Most of these jobs pay pretty well, however, I don't know if there's much security work in HK.
