Hello does anyone have any useful contacts that i might be able to use in any of Hong Kongs following ship yards. I work as a rigger (heavy lifts and steel errecting) in both an offshore and shipbuilding capacity? I mainly work in the north sea but i am looking to move to Hong Kong in the next 12 months so i am bacically scouting for potential future employment.

- China Merchants Industry Holdings Shipyard

- HUD Group Shipyard

- The Hong Kong Shipyard Limited

- Cheoy Lee Shipyards

- South China Shipyard

- Hong Kong Marine Department / Port Authority

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Dave

You may have problems getting a visa as there are lots of locals who work in the yards. I don't think there is much ship building done here mostly repairs and refitting.

Wonder what happened to Lee Kee Shipyard?

i'd have to agree unfortunately...unless you can bring something special to the table, in terms of unique expertise that is required here but unavailable by locals, you're chances of getting a visa are probably slim...

I was most interested in China Merchants Industry Holdings Shipyard as i believe they have a yard in both Hong Kong and just north of the boarder in Shezen where they have been building / repairing a number of oil & gas rigs and FPSO platforms. I have worked with a number of men who have come over to asia to work in a supervisory capacity and was hoping to follow in thier foot steps in a more permenant way. In terms of bring something else to the able i guess that would be having excelent experience repairing / rebuilding offshore stuctures old and new in some of the most difficult and challenging enviroments in the industry while completeing the jobs both safely and on time.

I am a layman, and I assume you probably know far more than I. From what I understand though, most work will take place across the border in China, rather than in Hong Kong itself. Offshore drilling rig manufacturers, from what I understand, the leading manufacturer is Keppel which is in Singapore, and then the Koreans come in a close second with Daewoo shipbuilding, the latter obviously produces more than just oil and gas rigs. I have heard that there are Chinese builders that want to compete, but for oil and gas rigs I don't know how effective they are, I think they are more effective competitors as ship builders.

A Korean Industrial company actually operating in Korea, hiring a foreigner for a manufacturing process would be almost unheard of, Korean companies tend to be xenophobic in their hiring practices. Obviously it occurs if the skill set you have is extremely specialised and they cannot fill the requirement with Korean nationals. Singapore by nature is more diverse will have a more liberal hiring process. If the Chinese are trying to compete then at least to begin with whilst they are the underdogs, they don't care where they their staff come from so long as they are learning and labour is qualified, unfortunately I know jack about their domestic ship building industry so I really cannot help. I wouldn't expect to be posted in Hong Kong though if you want to build oil and gas rigs. I am pretty sure that kind of thing is done over the border. If not Singapore or Korea Busan I thnk

Digital Blonde you are actually very well informed and thank you for your reply, i have seen a number of jobs advertised in singapore for the type of job i am looking for but since visting Hong Kong a couple of times i have had a mad urge to move there and set up camp. Hopefully i might be able to find what i am looking for if not i guess i will have to try singapore and just pay flying visits to Hong Kong when i can.

A shipyard in Shanghai is building a LNG tanker for Woodisde Offshore Petroleum. You may find something there as I know they have hired some British Engineers.

Can't give you any more details than that. Went to dinner in HK and struck up a conversation with a couple who were visiting from Shanghai. The guys cannot speak a word of Mandarin so

good luck.
