My baby is 4.5 months old and her nails are very sharp even I trim her everyday. I use baby nail scissors to cut her nails, is there any technique that can cut the nails smoothly?
In order to avoid scratching her face, I always to put gloves on. Am I doing the right way?

Yes, baby's nails will scratch their faces no matter how nicely they're cut. Babies that young just don't have control over their movements and that's why they need to wear cotton gloves/mittens to protect themselves.
We found it ok to have the gloves/mittens on for most of the day, mostly when the baby is sleeping. But it's also good to have your baby's hands free so that they learn about touching and feeling. Best to have the gloves/mittens larger and allow for room to move their little fingers freely inside.

When will their nails improve?

You may get a blunter cut with nail clippers. These come in small sizes that are suitable for babies/toddlers.
As alcheng mentions mittens are a good idea, at least for night time.
As for "improving", the nails don't really. Your adult nails can still cut and scratch. Baby just learns not to scratch. And of course you should gently encourage this development.

what i did for months and months (another mum taught me) is to bite the nails off - sounds scary but the nail at the time are so soft - they just peel off without ever hurting the baby - just the long bit peels off - never going into the actual nail, if you know what i mean? was very smooth - try that, see if works for you

"When will their nails improve?"
Nails don't "improve", but babies will learn not to scratch their faces as they grow older. We took off our baby's mittens when we saw that he no longer scratched his face since he had more control over his body movements. I think it was around 6mos. or maybe even a bit earlier. So just hang in there, it will get better!

Yes, I also have a friend who bites the nails off his child. I'm not a nail biter, neither is his wife... I think maybe nail biters will have a good technique! Apparently, you can just suck on the nails for a bit to soften them up as well, and they just peel off quite easily.
