I want to buy a nice gadget for my husband's birthday -- something audio, video or photography related (something that converts slides/negs to digital, LPs to digital, etc.). Is Wanchai computer mall the best place to go? Have only gone there for strictly computer stuff in the past; don't know what the range is for gadgets. Would like a recommendation for somewhere that's non-geek friendly, with a good selection of clever and useful gadgets.

Wan Chai Computer Centre is, in comparison to ComputerZone and Golden Arcade, quite "mainstream" from a geek perspective. The lower floor in particular is good. Plenty of PDAs and such. Otherwise Tsim Sha Tsui has several stores along Nathan Road that cater to the tourist crowd, with digital cameras and the like.
If you want the really non-geek computer mall experience, you can always go to Windsor House. Very different from the others. The aisles are more than a meter wide if nothing else.

Thanks axpatguy38. Will check out Windsor House. I'm not looking for a PDA, but something more fun and unusual .... although I still don't know what! Suggestions welcome, guys.

Oregon Scientific projection clock is cool. They also have other nifty gadgets. I think you should definitely have a look. There are stores in Times Square and IFC Mall.

"Oregon Scientific is nice but the products usually have lower specs than other items yet the price is well above other brands."
That's because the sticker says "Oregon Scientific". ;) I do agree that you pay for the brand but to be fair the design is typically superior to other similar items.

One piece of advice - stay far away from the Nathan Road camera shops. These will rip you off and sell you things without all the included items like straps, batteries, cases, etc.
For converting slides/negs to digital files, you will need a negative scanner. For best results get the feeder types and not the flatbed. Suggest a Nikon Coolscan for your purposes. More expensive gives better scans and higher resolution files (bigger sizes as a result). Best to buy these from a camera specific store. Suggest two in Mongkok - Wing Shing and Man Shing - Tung Choi Street. Other photo gadgets to consider - photo storage/viewer for when you go on trips to back up files and view them on the road (consider a Epson); computer screeen colorometer - to measure and profile the colours coming from your computer so that printing colours will closely approximate the screen (consider a Spyder).
For HK-side computer fare try 298 and Wan Chai Computer Center - both within walking distance from MTR; or Windsor House (little more expensive).
For Kowloon side - I am not as familiar but there is Golden in Sham Shui Po.
