hi..my 1.4 year old boy has this pattern recently. this only happens if he wakes in middle of night.
often at night, he wakes and cries. he will soon settle back to sleep or need some milk. but when he tries to sleep back, his hands and feet at times will flunk out, as if he has "startle reflux" like baby!
he gets frustrated cos his startle reflux wakes him again as he tries to sleep. he will then cry.
so, i often have to hold his hand and feet until he is totall asleep and muscle relax totally.
why is that? is this common? how to resolve?

Even many adults have little startles as they fall asleep. This is normal. I guess it depends on the degree and amount. I wouldn't worry unduly. If it doesn't resolve itself in a few weeks call your pediatrician.

I thought everyone did it, I still do quite often just as I'm about to fall asleep and I'm 43.

I wanted to add that both our kids have had periods of jerkiness and waking up due to it. It's quite normal.
You should comfort him but not "too much". He needs to learn to fall asleep on his own despite the startles. Otherwise he will be dependent on you to fall asleep. This may be hard on you as there will be some crying but it is better in the long run.
