any ideas...

I was wondering if anyone has any idea where I can search for English speaking Jobs. I have right of abode in Hong Kong, (so don't need a visa) but can only speak basic Cantonese and Mandarin. Ideally I would like to get a job full time in an office. I used to be an office manager, although have been out of that for quite a while now (stopped to have kids) so have been working part time for different companies doing various different jobs. I have also retrained and am currently also working as a designer and graphic designer alongside the various admin jobs. None can take me on full time as they are only small companies and can't afford to pay a full time salary, I have been working at a cheap rate to get current experience in! I now need to consolidate them all and get a fixed income. However all jobs I have been looking at require fluent Canonese at minimum. I am British and well educated with a degree, but my language skills (or lack thereof) are seriously letting me down! I am open to any ideas and if there is a specific industry that I could get experience in as well as earning that dosen't need Cantonese or Mandarin that would be ideal! I am not sure which way to turn and would really appreciate any help. Thanks.

You tried listing with some of the recruitment agencies? Look up jobsdb.com or classifiedpost.com or careerjet.hk to get some names. Off the top of my head, Adecco, Michael Page, Ambition, Charterhouse, Hays, Manpower, Drake, Aquent..the list goes on. I'm Chinese but grew up overseas and while I speak fluent Cantonese, I've been told that unless I read and write Chinese, my options are limited. But I simply refused to believe that, when I'm walking around Central and the place is full of Westerners!!! People who tell you that are just lazy and can't be @ssed to help you.

sorry to disappoint you but it's different with headhunters here too. based on my experience, unlike in other countries where they work for you, headhunters work for their corporate clients.

this means that instead of assisting you looking into many job possibilities, they would concentrate on looking for the right staff for their clients.

it is encouraging in the beginning that they will ask you to come in for a chat but in the long run, unless you are the person they are looking for for their client, your resume will be put on the database.
