Tainted milk powder in china

ORIGINAL POST

The news about tainted milk powder got me checking the tin of Neslac 1+ which my baby is taking. I always thought that it was imported but realised after reading the fine print that it is actually made in China.

Now I am panicking a bit. I will ofcourse buy another brand tom itself which is not manufactured in China. Was just wondering whether I am the only one panicking.

Also, which one would be easier to switch - Enfapro, Aptamil...which one tastes better.. would love to hear from existing users of these brands..

thanks a lot..

we used HIPP organic. it's from the UK and you can get it from Bumps to Babes. it's not as convenient as the others you can get at Mannings and Wellcom etc. but if you want absolute peace of mind!!...

Yes it's really horrible. i think parents should demand that each batch of formula should come with test results for presence and quantities of known toxic substances. i dont know maybe they could post on the web or something.

Cow and gate from mannings for ex says PRODUCT OF HOLLAND and then in really small print it says made in indonesia or something.

in the age of globalisation, finding where somethig comes from and if it's really uncontaminated is a nightmare. I mean, it's not like the soil and air of industrialised countries is pristine.... to the contrary...though some countries have better regulations and control (we hope). It's really the pits

Sadly, this is not just a Chinese problem.

The Austrian Agency for Health & Food Safety tested products on 11 July 07 and found the following contaminated with Enterobacter Sakazakii:

* HIPP Hypoallergene Anfangsnahrung HA1 (Starter Formula HA1)

* Milupa Pre Aptamil HA

* Wyeth Babylove Dauermilch

Other recalls in 2008 are a recall of Natur and Confort formula in Spain found to be contaminated with Salmonella Enterica and Nestlé's formula in South Africa which had excessive levels of copper, iron and zinc due to a mixing error.

It is the nature of mass produced food products that manufacturing errors will occur.

With present technology at least, it is the nature of powdered formula that it is not sterile and may be contaminated with harmful pathogens such as Enterobacter Sakazakii and Salmonella.

but even if we are told where the products are made is still not good enough, because we don't know where they bought their raw material from. For instance, I heard alot of japanese company buy their raw material from china and uses it to make stuff and then export it out under "made in japan". So now I so afraid that those japanese brand milk power are contaminated too. Can we find a lab to test it ourselfs??

Certainly. However in Europe, Oceania and North America you will typically have self-regulation within the industry. In China it seems to be more "what can we get away with this month?".

so true ax, and on top of that you have a government not willing to admit the truth until enough people become outraged that they can no longer hide it;

and this situation is hardly a 'manufacturing error'! its the deliberate introduction of a poisonous substance to boost profits...
