Wireless network icons. Usually 4 open squares and it's scanning for wireless networks. 4 solid means connected to a network. And yes will kill the battery life!

On the E65 main screen you have a WLAN item (typically at the bottom). It may say "Refreshing" or the name of a network. On the left of this item is a very stylized antenna. Click on that and set "Switch WLAN Scan Off". That will turn off the WLAN antenna. You should only turn this feature on if you want to connect to a Wireless network because, as mentioned, it kills battery life.
