Emergency services

Hi all,

Can someone tell me what the emergency number is in HK (equivalent to 911 or 000)? Does this number work via mobiles? Is it English speaking or there is a seperate number for English?

What "level of service" should I expect from the HK emergency service/ambulance system? Any cultural oddness a foreigner wouldn't be aware of?

For example in Australia you ring 000 and an ambulance should be at your door within 10 to 15m. Cars give way to ambulances etc on the road and so fourth.

While in Japan you have a relatively long wait for an ambulance (Japanese do not give way to emergency services at all). And since there are dozens of streets with no names and houses don't have street numbers you are also expected to meet the ambulance at a major intersection and show them where to go.

God forbid we ever have to use the service while in HK but just wanted to get some info ahead of time.

They also have a lot of emergency motorbikes here to get to the scene of an accident quicker, so they start the emergency care whilst waiting for the ambulance to get through.

fyi... 911 also works as an emergency number here in HK. and it is in english too. on a side note, i accidentally happened on a short service segment on Pearl TV (?) and it was about "how to use the 999 number correctly". obviously there is a problem with too many people using the 999 number for inappropriate situations like burst plumbing etc. apparently, every day, 1000 calls are NOT suitable for the 999 emergency status. imagine how that is affecting the real emergency calls. i was shocked and scared!!!

112 is the number used here to call from mobile phones. It doesn't work from the normal phone (I just checked). Here is Australia.

Of course since I was confident it didn't work (I didn't check via the mobile as I know that works just landline).

This happens in every country. Rather sad to think people can't tell the difference between "life threatening" and not.
