Starbucks and Pacific Coffee have announced they are going with the soy milk over cow's milk to avoid the recent scare. I would worry less about using soy milk. Pick up today's SCMP as they have full 2 pages coverage on which brands are used by what restaurant chains.

It it's made in China we won't buy it. That includes soymilk. But that was the case even before the current scare. This is only the latest of many...

I really have no problem with that. It's probably better than the formula anyway.

o that white rabbit candy had melamine but they say you had to eat about 132 pieces a day (something like that) for a period of time for it to do harm.

Apparently poople are paranoid about everything. There is no excuse for the milk powder (formula) as you know how much infants take them per day. But for other things like the white rabbit candy, I think it is no harm if you only eat it occasionally. I agree with Wiz Bang that not only chinese products that we have to pay attention to.. however, the good point about western companies is they announce it shortly after they know the problem... unlike the Chinese companies...they wait until they cant hide it anymore.

that's true. profit first before anything else seems to be the norm for china companies.

and consider also that china exports a lot of raw materials. so even though it's made in australia, uk, us etc etc... there's no telling where the raw materials came from. take for example the cream or is is red bean paste buns MADE IN JAPAN, but the red bean paste came from China or Mr. Brown coffee in taiwan which uses milk powder from china.

make your own soyabean milk as one poster say. but where did the soya bean come from? was fertilzer and pesticide used ?

is time to go for organic

Poisonous substances should not be in food. Whether the food is organic or not has no bearing. The same kind of swindle could have happened with organic food.

Indeed. There will always be occasional issues. The defining point is how they are addressed.

if you are really paranoid about the food in the markets today. then the only way is to grow your own food and milk your own cow.

I may be wrong, but I understood that melamine was added to milk to boost the protein content, so I wouldn't have thought it would be an issue with soya milk as is not normally consumed for its protein content. Instead it is usually fortified with calcium. That's the only reason I use it, as a substitute for milk, which I cannot tolerate, but unfortunately the only thing that seems to be added to local soya milk is sugar and chocolate. With so many varieties, I've often wondered why they don't fortify it with calcium and offer a sugar-free one. It would save me a small fortune as I currently pay big bucks for imported cartons from the UK or Australia.

Thames,

From what I read the milk was watered down so the melamine was added in order not to boost the protein (compared to 'normal' milk) as such but to make it appear at the 'correct' level - of course I too may be wrong!

Out of interest anyone know the list of government clinics where kids can be taken for tests?

Taiwan's Pizza Hut said Friday it had pulled grated cheese from its outlets after they were found to contain unacceptably high levels of the industrial chemical melamine.

The news said that the cheese came from NZ

===========

The Hong Kong government said on Friday that it has found the toxic chemical melamine in Heinz baby cereal and in rice crackers.

as i said, there are many raw materials exported from china and incorporated in other food stuff made elsewhere which could also be suspect for the chemical

uglybetty, I agree - go organic. But for now, 'tis best to avoid all dairy products, esp if you, like me, consume copious amounts.

No problem with soy, but it just doesn't go with coffee... go for soy bean drinks that's available in any non-expat areas. they are made fresh at the stall, just check for that luminous green substance that they add in... jk
