Motorola is indeed very big. However I would only call them "industry standard" in North America.

Check out the shops outside (across on the same side as McD's) Golden Computer Mall in Sham Sui Po. The rule is for non-licenced walkies in HK, you can't have any walkies transmitting over 0.5watts or something weak like that. It's much weaker than the restrictions in N. America which allow you to have up to 1W before you need a radio licence.

I got mine for use on a cruise ship since mobiles are almost always roaming and gets expensive to just find where your buddies are on the ship! Plus don't get anything from across the border (China) cuz they are all fakes and will die as soon as you use them back home! I got ripped off this way and ended up paying way more than if I just got the real ones here. BTW I got the Motorolas, they're very good with good range as well. Don't get anything small that looks like a kids toy, it will only disappoint you! Walkies need to come with big long antennas, unlike mobile phones.

There are a few shops in Ap Liu Street that sell Motorollas. You can get them in a set of two with rechargable batteries and chargers for under $500HK. They have a range of up to 3 km. Becareful as some are illegal in HK as they use a secured frequency. The legality issue is on the frequency bandwidth not the power. I ahve a pair I have been using for 5 years now and both have been dropped into the water (fresh and salt) when fishing. Pulled them out opened the up and dried with a hair drier and they still work perfectly well.
