Legally acceptable levels of Melamine??

Reading in todays, and previous issues of the Standard and SCMP, I've come across many references to foods that are deemed to have 'acceptable levels of melamine' and pose no threat to children or adults...why on Earth would ANY amount of an industrial chemical with no plausible use other than to boost the apparent level of protien in foods be even tolerated let alone given an "acceptable level"???

No matter the process, there will always be traces of various chemicals in processed foods like milk. There simply isn't any way to purify them more. Acceptable levels are typically infinitesimal.

Lots of things are safe in low concentrations (the body simply deals with it), but become toxic at higher concentrations. Incidentally this includes water. Even radioactivity is safe in small amounts, for example from the fluorescent dials in watches.

I uderstand and totally agree with what you're saying but in this case, melamine is a completely separate material with no link to the food production process at all (it is used to make plastics, albeit in some food packaging but not UHT boxes or milk powder tins/bags)...given the reaction to this latest scandal, I would hope for a total ban on any amount of melamine in foods.

FWIW, I'm not in the 'sterilize everything and cello-wrap your children to protect them from the environment' camp...i ate dirt as a kid and expect mine to do the same lol!
