Agreed with cara. Pura fresh milk, New Zealand or President butter, President cream, Yoplait or Yo Baby yogurt are just a few examples of products that have never been to the mainland.

I am not buying ANYTHING made in China or HK.

The HK gov't is allowing some products with melamine legally... because they say it's not possible to have 0.0 of it in any food products. I forgot what the number was, something like 0.36 mg...etc.... whatever. Alot of legislative council members are arguing for 0 tolerance.

So for example, the Nestle Condense Milk that we all love so much in baking..... and toast... has melamine in it, but they can sell it because it has LESS than the number they say allowed.

And like certain milk, candy bars...etc. I read it in the newspaper... was appalled.

So, I am only buying products from Australia, UK and Japan.

No guarantee, but that's the best I can do for my family's health for now unless we don't eat anymore.

I stay away from buying cakes, breads, and egg tarts...etc. made locally either.

But even stuff from NZ etc have a certain amount in, apparently under something like 2 parts per million is deemed OK. I read one report from a NZ product that says it gets into the food from the manufacturing process.

And looking at the above link, out of 500 products tested over 5 days only 3 had any melamine found, and 2 of those were cadburys chocolate biscuits, none of the obvious chinese food stuff..

As long as you eat/drink imported products that are "pure" (e.g. 100% milk and such) you should be fine.

Not to discount the risks but small amounts of melamine are not very toxic so even if you or your children are exposed to one tainted chocolate bar there is little risk. The children who died and got sick were eating/drinking tainted products every day several times.

"So, I am only buying products from Australia, UK and Japan."

I think you'll also be fine with the US, Switzerland (chocolate) and Sweden (chocolate).

"I am not buying ANYTHING made in China or HK."

We've never done that. There were too many food scares even before this.

I'm with you also, Cara. We simply cannot afford imported products :-(

The only imported product I buy regularly is PURA and only because the local milk is too watery for my liking but lately, I can't seem to find them in local supermarkets. They are almost always out of stock.

My daughter's school has just sent out a newsletter saying that they will NOT use ANY milk for the children's tea break for the time being. It's so sad.

smsm, thanks for the link. At least we can still buy those products that have already been tested as "safe".
