I just checked 3 Air lines which operate direct flights from HKG to London, with Virgin Atlantic the best price, Air Newzealand comes the second and BA the third. CX is very expensive so out of the question. There are others with 1 or 2 stops of course. Can anyone suggest any direct flights with good price? Time of flying is roughly x'mas time. Many thanks.

Try http://www.kayak.com . It covers most airlines. You can get price comparisons, graphs of fare depending on date ("Chart View"), etc etc... Remember to use the "LON" code for London so that you cover all the airports.
Still, I don't think you'll find very cheap fares around Christmas.

I don't think you will be able to get a non-stop flight for under HK$4000. You might want to try your luck at: www.flights.com.hk
Alternatively, you can fly Finnair, Singapore Airlines, Korean Airlines - these have a short stopover, but not too onerous.

Finnair is the best choice time wise if you have a stopover since Helsinki is closest to the straight line to Europe.
