Bitten in the water

I went swimming recently at a beach off southern Lantau Island. I noticed that in shallow water (within 50 meters from shore) I was getting stung or bitten by invisible little creatures. Each bite felt like a needle being jabbed into my skin. Only the top part of my body was being bitten -- shoulders and arms.

People I was with said it was jellyfish, but I didn't see anything. Does anyone have any experience with this? What was biting us?

We were out on a junk on South Lantau last weekend and 2 children got stung by something - I guess jellyfish. THe boat crew had nothing to offer us other than vapour rub for cold (!!!) thankfully another Mum had some cream for stings. We moved the boat to another bay and all was OK. I cannot believe the boat had nothing on boat to assist us. I will remember next time to bring along white vinegar which I believe is good as 9-11 suggests above.

Worst case, you can actually use urine on the burn.

I've done a little researching and it seems that sea lice is the most likely explanation. They are basically the microscopic larvae of jellyfish. When people said we were being stung by "tiny jellyfish" yesterday, I thought they were talking nonsense. Had they said "microscopic jellyfish larvae", I would have been more inclined to believe them!

Yeah that sounds like jellyfish to me too. FYI urine will also work in emergency situations if you step on sea urchins. So if you're pissed at someone, here's your chance! ;)

Hehe. Urine is actually very useful if you really really can't find any other disinfectant. It was also used ye olden tymes to waterproof boots. Ye peed in them and left them overnight.

we used to call them jelly-bugs when we were kids, apart from the initial pain they are pretty harmless. Just rub some antisan cream on before going to bed. However, some kids could have a nasty allergic reaction.
