What are the requirements for a car license that can go between HK and China? I am referring to the HK-CHINA license plate that you see on the front of some cars in Hong Kong?
I heard it is very difficult to get it these days. I was told that even if I am willing to pay HK$300k or have a business interest in China, it will still be impossible to get it. Is it true ?

Our company has a vehicle with both plates albeit that the vehicle is in China and comes into HK to collect staff and take them back over the border.
Besides the high cost of the plates the company has to have a certain amount of investment in China and vice versa. I am not sure of the $$investment but believe it is pretty high.

You need a business interest in China, not just a company but one that is creating money - something like US$10 million a year. Not sure of exact figure but it's a lot.
A legal plate will set you back around $600k nowadays, although cheaper on black market. Certainly not worth it if you are involved in an accident up there. To get that you will need a closed area permit, an SZ driving license and permission to drive your car there from the Guangdong Public Security Bureau.
Takes quite a bit to sort out and also remember to change your insurance to reflect driving on the mainland which will obviously put premiums through the roof.

Its just not worth it, just lease a car and driver with dual plates and have him at your disposal 24/7 ....

HK Transport Dept website has information on cross border driving and links to other sites. Black / Grey market place plates you'll have to find. Our company plates have been done legally.
