Hi,
I am exclusively breastfeeding my two-month-old. Personally, I think breastmilk is best because it's completely natural - but I just wanted to know what other people think.
1. Do you think it's okay if the baby only has breastmilk until solids are introduced?
2. What do you think about giving baby boiled water, or boiled sugar water, or diluted juice?
Lots of people ask me if I give my baby water sometimes when it's a really hot day. My response has always been that I don't want baby having anything except breastmilk... I just wonder if I'm being ignorant!
Thanks.

hmmmm... i think if you read up about this you will find that exclusively breastfeeding is absolutely the answer for a 2 month old!!! don't think they need anything else - especially NOT sugar water or diluted juice at this age! :) they are even too young for boiled water... breastmilk is already 80% water. speak to any peadatrician or lactation consultant and they will give you the whole spiel... good luck!

no sugar!! water is fine tho - boiled and cooled of course.

Exclusively breastfed is fine until introducing solids. If you think your baby is a bit hot from being out and about, then give them a breastfeed to rehydrate him/her.
It's not a bad thing to introduce cool boiled water from time to time, but it's not an issue and definitely not sugar water or diluted juice.
I bf exclusively until my baby moved onto solids at 5.5/6 months with my first baby. I also continued breastfeeding until my baby was 13 months.
Embrace the breastfeeding, as long as your baby is putting on weight and meeting the milestones then he/she is fine.
I could only feed my second baby for 7 weeks and even now 4 months later I still mourn about not being able to bf this time around.

Mine had exclusive BM for the first 6 months until I introduced solids, then he would have water (no juice and certainly no sugar) with his meals from a sippy cup. Juice (diluted half-and-half) didn't come into the picture until very recently -just before his 2nd birthday. He still asks for water more than juice.

"1. Do you think it's okay if the baby only has breastmilk until solids are introduced?"
Sure. Technically the baby can probably live on breastmilk for a year. More realistically, you'll introduce water with solids at 5-8 months.
"2. What do you think about giving baby boiled water, or boiled sugar water, or diluted juice?"
No sugar water or diluted juice are needed. Start with just water and get baby used to that. You'll have a hard time introducing plain water if baby is used to sugars. Besides they're not needed. Remember that juice has as much sugar as soda.

Great - thanks!
Yes, I'm certainly much happier about the idea of just breastmilk and nothing else! Thanks for your replies.

Most health organizations recommend exclusive breastfeeding to 6 months of age followed by the introduction of solids and continued breastfeeding through the first year and beyond.
Breastfed babies do not require additional water. Diluted juice or sugar water provides no immunological protection and are not advised due to the risk of dental caries. Breastfeed your baby frequently to satisfy thirst, hunger and for comfort.
