The relocation issue came up again at my firm asking me to move to HK. I have two very young kids. The older one now is 3 and going to a half-day preschool here in the states. I am wondering what kind of school option I have out in HK. Do I have to start lining him up for American international School in HK (ie: should I ask my firm to get a spot for him and my younger one, who is only 1 year behind).

Also how many American International School is out there in HK (I only found one online).

Another one is how important it is for a social/sports club in HK for young family like us? How much the American club cost and how long is the wait?

thx!

Hong Kong International School is the more popular American curriculum school here. Very expensive with long wait lists, if your company has debentures (paid spots) there, definitely ask...you can be fast tracked up the list.

American IS doesn't have the best rep. among ISs here...certainly not an upper tier school (which would likely include HKIS, Australian, Canadian, Chinese, German-Swiss, and French...maybe a few others)...but you certainly don't have to be tied to an American school..look at schools with the IB curriculum that offer a more international-thinking approach to learning...

but yeah, start applying now for the 2009 school year

One. But as mentioned by funbobby, you have plenty of English speaking options.

AIS is in Kowloon Tong, don't really here much about it, I knew someone that went there and they were pretty much the only 2 westeners. Hong Kong International school, is American based, where a lot of the American kids go, great campus, one of the, if not the most expensive school in HK.

I looked at the HKIS's website, even the debenture has a waiting list :) geez... tougher than going into Harvard! So what will be my next best bet? (school wise)

and how important it is to join the American Club for my family. Good for kids to socialize? Thx!!

you are in a tough position as typically the slots for kids your age are very popular and very tight...space opens up in the middle school/secondary school slots (not much help I know)...really take a look at all the big schools, and look at ESF too...you can always transfer later if spots open up and you are on the ball to catch them! good luck

If looking on HK island, I believe that Canadian International School and then Hong Kong Academy are the most popular second choices for "American/ N. American" style education. Canadian is a large school with Pre-reception (age 3+) through to Grade 12. HK Academy is a much younger school with a small community orientation for pre-school and primary years.
