If you have many pictures of them you can make a nice photo album. Very personal. Make sure you get creative, doing collages, cutting pics up in crazy shapes, adding comments, etc...

it is true, the best gift is a token or a red packet or check the wedding registry. aside from that you could make a donation in their name

it's going to be a disappointment if you are to give something that may not be in their taste and won't be appreciated .

For our friends who just got married last month, a few of us got together and bought them a wine fridge and then got a couple of dozen mixed bottles of wine to fill it up. They really loved the gift and said it was something they probably would not have bothered to have bought for themselves.

thanks for your suggestions.. all good comments. they don't have a wedding registry, we don't have any photos of them and not so crazy about giving cash (and they have a huge wine fridge with tons of wine)...... feeling very lost especially as they'd given us an extremely generous wedding gift.....

can you get a few invited friends to pool for a short holiday trip for them?

im sure they could well afford a trip to moon, but if you arrange something extra together in the trip like spa treatments, activities like an elephant/camel trek, cooking lessons, bungee jumping, 4wd drive across the sand dunes, parasailing, parachute jump etc etc. - it would be more special

around hkd10,000.....

holiday idea is interesting but as they have such strong tastes and go on holidays all the time, i'm not so sure... perhaps some kind of art work? arghh i really don't know !

I really really appreciate ALL your comments on this !!!

i disagree - crystals maybe nice but again it falls under the category "taste".

it is understandable that your daughter's present is special and something to be treasured.

however giving someone something that may not be their taste and that wouldn't suit their decor and lifestyle is not going to work.

"nobody can reject a beautiful piece" - maybe but then again beautiful is subjective.

I agree. Personally I found most such crystal sculptures rather tacky. The bride and groom might not, though.

Baccarat and Lalique undoubtedly have great workmanship and uber expensive. But that is not the point of contention here but rather would the couple agree with your taste in crystals?

Another analogy that I can think of is this. If I wear Armani, Dior or other name brand clothing - I know the workmanship is fabulous, the price is in the upper bracket of what most people could afford, and the designer has outfitted many a rich and famous people . However, it still boils down to would the design fit and suit me? Would I look as fabulous and glamorous ? Would it fit my lifestyle?

Or am I just buying because the product is designer and uber expensive and many rich and famous are wearing that designer's collection?

You said so yourself - "even expensive ones may not be appreciated unless you are very close to them and know their taste"

Crystal for this particular couple seems to be the ideal gift with the $10,000 budget Kimmy intends to spend. Baccarat would be my choice or maybe a gift coupon would also be appropriate.

Though this post is quite old but I just recently had a similar problem finding some unique wedding gifts, till I came across this shop. Its called Helis & Tang and is in Soho Aberdeen Street. They have a great collection of crystal (Baccarat and some Lalique I saw), porcelain (mainly German Meissen) and a lot of sterling silver. Their prices seem pretty reasonable too. But even just a visit is well worth the time. Its a very cute and stylish shop.

Prearrange with a Hotel for a Post Honeymoon (flexi-date use) weekend at a deluxe hotel with Spa, Champagne lunch (instead of breakfast). If budget allows, throw in helicopter ride for 2 over HK.

Or if budget or personality preference allows, take them to deluxe hotel in Macao with limmousine to shows included. Helicopter them back.

Or a deluxe Post Honeymoon romantic dinner (flexi-date use) with a seranading band or a hirable violinist.

Or go to WaiKee and buy a sterling silver item (befitting a range of budgets), engraved with their names.

Or if they are Chinese, order a set of 12 silvercapped chopsticks on bone (used to be ivory) for entertaining use with chopstick stands and serving spoons. Engraved with their family names on each of the chopstick.

Better than a crystal, just another one amongst others; overtime it would be hard put for the receiver to remember which was the one piece you gave.
