Does anyone know where I can buy instant dashi, bonito flakes, mirin and shiitake mushrooms. I have some great Japanese cook books but can't find the ingredients.

Have you tried Citysuper? - they will have most of those - also the basement of SOGO has a Japanese supermarket that is supposed to be good.

Yes, thanks. I have tried all the obvious places. If these items exist then they are in Japanese and I can't read them!

They have mirin i am sure, I know Great and Citysuper do - I always have to try to read the English description off the self label - if it's there - or in Hong Kong they often have to stick an extra ingredients label on the back to comply with the labeling laws and sometimes you can glean what it is from that.

The above recipe has the item numbers in Citysuper for your Mirin, Bonito flakes and shiitake - if you take them in with you I'm sure someone will help you find them.

Thanks.. I've found most things at City Super but now I've decided what I really need is a Japanese cooking class!
