Do plenty of research online first.
You can find dealers in the US who would match on-line published wholesale prices with relative ease.
In HK even dealers who are "close" friends have trouble coming within 10% of wholesale prices on GIA certified stones. (they will match on non-certified stones. but it just means they are using stone 2 grades lower.)

Oski, I too have seen diamond dealers in the US, and am amazed at how cheap they are. Wonder if you can answer my question: if you buy diamond jewellery from USA and ship to Hong Kong, does HK Customs charge duty?

Stick with the main jewellery chains, TSL, Chow Sang Sang they have too much to lose in ripping you off. A friend is a daimond grader for TSL and what discount he gets for me is very small so they don'y make a lot on the stone. They make thier money in working the mount gold/silver/platinum etc. So if you are just buying the stone they are a good bet.
If you are buying it mounted they be aware of the gold content. Here it is high 24K and many hight street dealers in UK won't touch the gold

I bought my engagement ring and wedding ring from Continental Diamond in Central. Everyone praises how beautiful the diamond is!!! I paid $46,000 for a 1.05 carat D color with some flaws (may be ss1 or something I don't remember) about 3 months ago. Hi,
I got married in March and purchased my ring from a small unassuming jewel on Stanley Street called One Price Diamonds. How did I find this shop? It was referred to me by a friend who's wife is in a high level position at Debeers. I had been to many stores and diamond dealers and the people at this little shop were by far the most helpful and non pushy. They listened to my budgets and found me a diamond that far exceeded my expectations!!!
