Unfortunately, being the 3rd car usually means the 2nd car will lay claims on you and the 1st car on the 2nd. Any witnesses at the site of accident? Usually it'll help your case a lot if you can find a witness who can say it WASN'T your fault. What about the police report?

You probably need some legal advice here. You may be able to apply to join the 1st car as a party to the case, so that the sequence of claim can be resolved if it wasnt your fault in the first place. One thing you have to watch is legal cost, a litigator costs at least 3500 per hour for advice with court work on top. If you lose your case, you'll likely to have to pay the cost of the other side. You should consider negotiating for settlement on a without prejudice basis. good luck

Traffic Accident Reconstruction Experts cost more than lawyers. If you did hit the car in front no matter how slight you are still liable for Careless Driving. Fine about $5k plus 5 points. If you get a TAR expert you will probably also need a traffic specialist lawyer that will cost over $30k. this is teh legal aspect.
for teh civil claim it will be the insurers to decide. There is culpabaly liability involved. Your tap on the car infront could have scared the driver who jumped at the fright and released teh foot brake causing his car to move forward and hit the car infront.
If you admit that you hit the car infront of you then really you don't have much of a leg to stand on.
