Reading & Writing Difficulty

My son (6) has reading and writing difficulty.

He is just not interested, and does not have the patience to sit and read and write during class.

He is better at home, when he has one-to-one assistance with me, but he seems to drift away in the class atmosphere. It seems like he is not ready for it, or doesn't want to do it because he does not find it interesting...

Does anyone have or had similar problems? Any comment & advice is truly appreciated!

I am also thinking about taking him to "Child and Family Centre". If you have used them please let me know.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say he has difficulty. Is there a problem or just lack of interest ? I have a 6 yr old son too and while he loves to read and is excellent at it, he hates writing. He just doesn't put any effort into it and much rather would do something else. Same goes for drawing, colouring - just something that gets done rather quickly. But give him a book and he can sit for an hour by himself.

With reading I guess he always showed an interest in books and loved being read to. We borrow books from the library, I read to him whenever he asks, I get books for him that I know he's going to enjoy and so we did all the right things there because he showed interest.

As for writing he just refused to do it. When he was in P1 last year the teacher advised me to let him be and not force it too much. So I did, this year the teacher said give him very limited writing to do. Pages of writing after a long day at school isn't such a good idea. So I now get him to do one line of writing an alphabet in his most perfect writing 3 times a week. When I want to get him to do writing we make a story book. He has a great time thinking up a story and then 'illustrating' it and writing the story, making a cover page, putting down the blurb etc. Typically the subjects he chooses are Ben10 adventures or sports (his favourite things)

So what I'm trying to say is maybe you can get him books about subjects that interest him, or take him to library, let him see you reading at home. If handwriting is an issue then get him to do a little bit of writing 2-3 times a week.
