Mini Hi-Fis?

ORIGINAL POST

Don't people buy these anymore? Fortress only has deep, bulky and fancy ones.... I'm looking for a very compact and simple one for a small room, with just CD-playing function.. Any suggestions on where to look anyone?

I think the reason mini HiFis are out of fashion is because they are being supplanted by iPod dock/speaker systems, which are a superior solution as long as you have an iPod.

"You will, of course, need access to a laptop or computer with itunes loaded on it."

iTunes is the norm but if you really really don't want to use it, WinAmp has a good iPod add-on.

You can also buy a iPod dock from Apple (fairly cheaply) and use the audio output to channel the sound into the line in/aux port of a HiFi system or even a 5.1 home theatre system.

Not sure what you mean by Mini Hifi. However, I saw quite a few of Japanese brand at Apita (Uny) in Taikoo Shing which has radio, mp3/CD and speaker in the same thing. Also, some boom box, IIRC

Thanks for your replies! Yes, it looks like everyone has iPods so traditional hi-fis aren't in demand as they used to be..... I'm actually not into the whole iPod thing so the search continues... boblam, what you described sounds perfect, I'm looking for a very small stereo with just CD-playing function (plus small speakers) that can rest on a narrow shelf... Are the ones you saw at Uny very small?

Go to the bigger Fortress and Broadway stores (for example in Times Square). I seem to recall that they have at least some of this stuff.

BTW I know you said "no" but you should consider the iPod route. It is a real game changer. Just rip all your old CDs (easy to do) and all your music is available in any combination you want without needing to change discs.
