Looking to stay in HK for a year

I am from the US making 75k us and am looking to go to HK for a year. I own my own company with all my clients here and as long as I have a good internet and phone connection I can live where I want.

From reading this forum (and I read every thread with the word visa in it) it sounds like it is fairly easy to get a year out of the 90 day tourist visa renewal scheme.

My plan would be to use HK as a base and travel from there to india for a couple of weeks. Japan for a couple of weeks. Mainland china for a couple of weeks, thailand, etc. basically traveling every couple of months.

Just wanted to get impressions on that.

Is it possible to get a multi-entry tourist visa if I talked to the HK immigration folks and told them my situation or would that just put a red flag next to my name.

Also if your on a tourist visa, how hard is it to rent a place for a year. I dont want to be hunting for a home every couple of months.

Finally any opinions on Singapore vs. HK. Seems to be a heated debate between people on which is cooler. Again this is going to be a homebase for me to travel and enjoy so I do not need it to be the beginning or end all of everything for me.

Thanks in advance.

You should find a nice service apartment and leave your belongings there and travel light when you check in and out for your various trips around Asia making HK your station for the year.

Oh yeah... I only plan on bringing two small suit cases to HK and will only bring one small bag when I make the trips... I learned the hard way some time ago about bringing too much stuff.... lol. Lesson learned.

which brings up another question. If say my pattern of travel was HK for 7 weeks and traveled 1 week fairly consistantly would that raise flags? Does the travel pattern need to be much more random? There 10 weeks, gone 3. Back for 7 gone for 1. Back for 8 gone for 4?

A couple more questions. I found a number of great articles and posts on cost of living however those were from early 2007. Has their been any major shifts sense in either food costs (I dont eat meat) or apartments costs. I was looking to spend around 10000hkd on an apartment in Tsim Sha Tsu, Hung Hom or Kowloon Ton area. As much as I would like to be on the island Kowloon seems to fit my budget better for lots of traveling and does have the advantage of being more local according to some people on facebook I have talked to from HK which actually I like more. being in an area dominated by foreigners would kind of defeat the purpose of living in Asia in my mind.

I lived in New York and it sounds like the island is like Manhattan and Kowloon is Brooklyn for just a rough comparison to give me a frame work to start from.

Thanks again everyone. Much appreciated

Hummm.. was not aware if was illegal for me to take care of my business back home. have not read that anywhere. Not that anyone will every know anyways so its a mote point.

On housing, yeah I realize that however I would be looking to lease it for a year not a new place every time I left. Some people might not go for it but I am sure some will. I will definitely be working on making some local connections before I leave to help. A native on facebook already said they would saying it will be a lot easier with someone who speaks cantonese.

you could also flat-share with someone (since you would be away alot anyway, and probably cheaper in the long run, and no worries bout a lease..)

How hard would it be for gpcovenant to arrange a work visa for himself?

I have actually been looking into that. I can use my business to set up a 'Representative Office' in HK. From there I believe the company could then apply for a visa for me.

Because it is a 'Representative Office' it can not actually do work or hire people in HK. its simple to allow a business to decide and do research about doing biz in HK. I believe that would make it somewhat easier to get a work visa as I would not have to prove why I could not get someone from HK or really produce a biz plan cause its not a business in that sense.

Anyways I am researching that so if anyone has tried that or knows someone who has and has any info would be very appreciative.
