Car seat in taxi - Sit 'n Stroll?

ORIGINAL POST

Hi,

I know there has been a lot of discussion over the concerns with car seats in taxis (given that you then have to lug them around when you are out and about). I have been researching a solution as our baby is now almost too big for the Maxi Cosi carseat and we don't have a car.

I have seen people mention the Sit n' Stroll on this website. Any feedback on these? Anyone know where you can get them in HK?

Thanks

No-one has a Sit n' Stroll?

What other options do people use when they don't have a car that they can leave the car seat in whilst out and about? Not that keen on the Baby Bjorn (and he is getting too big for it) and have heard bad things about the flight vest options. Any help appreciated. Thanks

The Sit n' Stroll works. A good option.

Baby Bjorn is definitely a false sense of safety. Those straps would snap right off in even a moderate crash. Same with flight vests. There are some harnesses built to replace car seats which you can use and they are much more sturdy than a Baby Bjorn. Can't remember the name right ow.

When the kid is two you can start using a Compass foldable booster. It is very light and folds "flat" but has full back and head support.

It is a hassle to drag car seats about, but it is a huge safety booster. All these small children riding around in cars with just the seatbelt or unstrapped would be illegal in Western Europe and the US, and for good reason. It has been known for decades that even a moderate crash at city speeds can seriously injury children (and adults) not strapped in.

Thanks axptguy. I was hoping that you would respond! Between you and Cara there is certainly a wealth of helpful information and advice!!

I have done a google search and managed to find some of the old threads from this website which I couldn't find via the search function on the website which is strange.

Seems that you cannot buy Sit n' Stroll in HK so will look further afield although shipping from the States/UK is a killer.

Query - I assume that the Sit n' Stroll affixes to the seat of a car by the wrapping the seatbelt around/through it (in the same sort of way as the maxi cosi)? My concern is that in New Zealand, all carseats are fitted to the car itself (ie: the car needs to be fitted with metal loops which you hook the car seat onto) but hoping that the Sit n' Stroll does not operate this way (which would appear to be the case since people use them in taxis and aircraft).

Agree with you re car seat standards elsewhere in the world. Strange it is not the case here too.

Thanks again

You can find the Sit n Stroll on Amazon.com. http://www.amazon.com/Lilly-Gold-Stroll-%1ACombination-Stroller/dp/B0006UF43M . It is sold through third parties so you may have a hard time getting it shipped to HK. this particular one only ships to the US. Look under "Product Details". You could contact the various sellers directly (look on the right under "more buying choices") and see what they can do.

This system is called LATCH in North America and ISOFIX in Europe. Practically all car seats that work with LATCH/ISOFIX will also attach with seat belts since cars made before the system was implemented (early 2000s) have no LATCH/ISOFIX mountings. I checked the Sit n Stroll manual http://www.tripleplayproducts.com/pdf/32.pdf and it does attach to car seats so will work in HK.

While I am typically against legislating against stupidity (go ahead, don't wear a helmet), I make an exception when the beneficiaries are children. The reason people don't use car seats is due to the lack of legislation and consequent enforcement.

Hi NZlawyergirl, I have one of these except I actually bought it in NZ where it is marketed as The Pod http://www.thepod.co.nz/. That may be an option if you are going to NZ any time soon. I could not find it anywhere else and companies in the US didn't seem to ship to HK.

I use mine a lot though admittedly not as a stroller. I find it a bit awkward getting it in and out of the car with a toddler strapped into it. It's very bulky and weighs about 12 kgs. I use it more as a portable car seat and it travels everywhere with us when we go overseas. As long as the car has a regular seat belt you can put it in no problems.

Thanks both. I will check out the Pod. Looks very similar.

Is it law here that you have to put your baby/child in a car seat in a taxi or with an infant is it ok to just have him/her on your chest in a carrier?

No law in HK to require a car seat in a taxi or other car. It is ok from the perspective of the law to have them in an infant carrier and I have done it before. Obviously safer in a car seat though.

Thanks NZlawyergirl. Could you tell me where I could find that law in writing? A link to a website perhaps? Thanks...

Hi katiefran. Just wanted to come back and say that we bought the Pod and are loving it. It is in fact a Sit n' Stroll just rebranded as the Pod (even the instruction manual is a Sit n' Stroll one). Thanks for the advice.

Patchy - sorry not sure of the exact legislation reference - just going by responses on here. More likely that there is no law dealing with car seat requirements for children rather than a piece of legislation saying that you don't have to have a car seat.

Much safer. Baby carriers are nowhere near strong enough to hold baby during a typical collision.

In regards to the official line, the most recent policy statement I can find on the Transport Department website is here:

http://www.td.gov.hk/en/publications_and_press_releases/press_releases/transport_department/index_id_433.html

In other words, no safety seats required in taxis
