Question for Australians: does skimmed/semi-skimmed milk exist?

Since Farm Milk has temporarily(?) ceased operations, I am looking for another source of fresh skimmed and semi-skimmed milk. The Indonesian brand Greenfields (from Australian cows!) is the only one I've found, and is not reliably stocked at P&S. For the past 12 years I've been wondering why it is that in HK the only skimmed/semi-skimmed products available are "milk drinks", both Australian and local, reconstituted from powder. Does fresh skimmed/semi-skimmed milk exist in Australia? Why does Hong Kong not import it?

"Why does Hong Kong not import it?"

Presumably some silly law. I agree with you about this. I miss semi-skim milk. The "milk drinks" are just plain gross.

Also wondering why none of the local companies market it -- they also offer only skimmed "milk drink".

Pauls, Anchor (NZ) and another brand (can't remember the name) all supply HK with UHT skimmed milk...surely this is better than fresh 'milk drink' crap? I drink it all the time, and can't taste the diff. between it and the skim i got back in Canada...skim milk is basically white water anyway...the flavor is in the fat that is removed...

I hate UHT milk. Anyone able to answer my question? (Why do the local and Australian brands sell only skimmed and semi-skimmed reconstituted "milk drink" here in Hong Kong, and not fresh skimmed and semi-skimmed milk?)

Agreed. However I do like semi-skim, which for me strikes a nice compromise. 1½-2% fat is good.

Isn't the Pura brand Australian fresh milk? That is the brand we buy since being put of the "milk drink" products. Pura is available at our Wellcome and PNS

Pura markets fresh full cream milk and reconstituted skimmed milk drink. No fresh skimmed or semi-skimmed.

PURA Slim, fresh milk is available at PNS TaiKoo. Personally, though hubby and I were once advocates of 'fresh only' we soon learned that the quality is often better in a UHT, particularly when we were living in KL. After a while, you can't tell the difference.

Devondale Skim UHT (99.9%) has the best taste by a running mile, full, rich, creamy. Better than fresh skim!

Also at Wellcome Repulse Bay, Taste Stanley, Great, CitySuper, etc...

Pura Slim, although not a UHT product and therefore sold alongside fresh milk in the refrigerated display units, is not fresh milk. It is a reconstituted "milk drink".

My guess why it is so hard to get fresh milk is that it is expensive to fly in. Fresh milk goes off within a few days / couple weeks. So you have to actually fly it here (think of the carbon footprint). UHT keeps for ages and would therefore be easier and cheaper to be shipped her.
