Without a HKID card with at least 7 months validity remaining you can only get a 2-entry visa valid for 3 months with 30 stay. You can get a 5 day visa on arrival in Shenzhen, but you'll need to check as I am not sure if this is open to all nationalities.

Rather unhelpfully, a lot of critical information is not available on the relevant websites, but I just applied and found out about the ID card thing. If you are a permanent resident you can apply for a 12 month multi-entry visa. If you are working here and have a standard ID card ,(not permanent), then you can get 6 months multi-entry, but again, you need at least 7 months validity remaining.

Supercat, please stop giving wrong infos to people. If you are not sure better say nothing!

HKID card holders can apply for 12 month multiple visas

HK permanent residents can apply for 3 year multiple visas

The Lowu visa office has never been closed. During the Olympics they had a list of nationalities that were not allowed to apply and you could only apply if you were HK resident.

Most of the restrictions have been lifted. Non HK resident can get visas now in Lowu - certain nationalities are still exempted.

Thanks Lace. Appreciate your time. We are NZ passport holders (without HKIDs) so seems probably OK. Cheers !

Three weeks ago, we went to Shenzen. We have HK permanent id, but no visa was issued at Lo Wu. They told us to go back to Wanchai to get the visa.

We would like to go tomorrow. Would anybody know if visa is issued upon arrival at Lo Wu. Some one told me that visa is issued there only if we have a one day/night stay at Shenzen. Any information in this regard would be most appreciated.

What passport are you holding? They don't issue visas in Lowu to US passport holders.

There are 36 countries which cannot get visas at the border, regardless of permanent HKID or not. One of them is South Africa. Perhaps India is another..?
