Night Feeds

ORIGINAL POST

My baby is 6 weeks old now. When is it a good time to get her off night feeds? Should I train her to get off it, or will she naturally go off it herself? If i need to train her, how do I do it? I'm a first time mom so i'll need lots of advice from anyone who is more experienced. Thank you.

most babies will be a few months before they go without night feeds. Although I was lucky with my last baby, she went through from 7 weeks. She slept through a couple of nights, then on the 3rd night she woke, but I didn't giver her a bottle as she'd managed the previous 2 nights without one, she slept through each night after that. But my first was about 9 months. But realistically I think you're looking at more likely 4 to 5 months.

You can always try doing a night feed very late, as in 2300-0000, then do an early feed at 0500 and put baby back to bed. This worked better for us than the middle of the night. My wife would just start working after the morning feed anyway (workaholic).

Some babies will just quit cold turkey (they'll keep sleeping). Otherwise slowly move the feed times by 10-20 minutes each day until you reach a new equilibrium. Also, give a larger feed before the longer sleep period. If you find that there is a lot of crying, you may have to backtrack.

6 wks is a bit early, remember at that age their stomach is so tiny, they can not drink that much and "store" it. Is she gaining good weight? I would check with your doctor on that one. We started cutting night feeds at around 4 months...

thanks for the advice. she's gaining weight fine. she's now 11.5 lbs.

now i feed her at 11 pm then, i dun feed her during the night until she cries. so far, she's been able to last 4.5 - 5 hours. Like Idsllvn said, i think it's a bit early but some people are telling me it's a good time. But i think i should just take the cue from the baby.

Thanks again.
