Hi, can anyone provide info on if it's good value to go to Golden Computer Centre in Sham Shui Po please?
My uncle is visiting and is a computer buff, and he is very interested in checking it out, but just want to make sure if worth his while as he is only here for one day.
Thanks in advance!

No, according to my husband. If you are in a rush to buy things and of quality, Sham Shui Po is not the place to go. You better off going to reputable big retailers like Broadway, Fortress etc. as quality is more important to tourists.

You can go to Wanchai computer mall instead. Many visiting businessmen frequent that bldg. too.

Here's a breakdown:
- Golden Computer Arcade in Sham Shui Po. The mother of HK computer centres. Largest (at least twice the WCCC) and most enthusiast friendly. The lower floor is especially good.
- ComputerZone at 298 Hennessy Road. Not as large but almost as enthusiast friendly as GCA. Note especially the cooling specialist on the top floor with the great selection of Thermalright and Silverstone components (opens around 1400).
- Wan Chai Computer Centre. Much more mainstream oriented. The used laptop stores on the top floor are great though.
- Windsor House Computer Mall. A very sad excuse for a computer centre and a total tourist trap.
- 188 Centre on 188 Wan Chai Road. Not a lot of computer stuff. Mostly console oriented and has a lot of manga/anime stuff like figurines.
- Mong Kok Computer Centre. I am ashamed to say I have never been to it.
If your uncle is staying on the island, I would go to ComputerZone and WCCC since they are only a few hundred meters apart. If he is staying on the Kowloon side it might be worth going to GCA but I still think CZ+WCCC is more bang for your buck given his short stay.
I would note that what you can find in HK pales in comparison to online shopping in the US. I still like to wander the computer centres though, even without buying anything. It's a great experience for a computer geek.
babswymak, no self-respecting computer buff would buy a computer at Broadway or Fortress. They don't have components, only finished systems and their offerings are very mainstream. For small consumer electronics they do have some good stuff but still very mainstream. None of the specialist stuff you see in the computer centres. I get a feeling neenib's uncle is more in the enthusiast segment and wants to indulge in the experience.
