Avoiding Estate Agents Fees !

With the property market not too healthy, is it viable as a potential renter/buyer to say to an agent.

"Look i'll take the unit, but your fees can be paid for by the seller/renter whom you are representing"

Has anyone tried this lately? Are there agents who accept this stance as a commercial reality?

Its hard enough to afford the rents, without making large lump sum payments to agents.

We've rented 5 places in HK in the 11 years we've been here, never paid agency fees. Have always told the agents up front that the landlord will have to cover them. Never had a problem.

Nice one. Thats the best way cd.

I think the person receiving the $$ should be paying the fees. The estate agent is primarily representing them.

You are lucky. We had always pay half of the monthly rental every time we used an agency. The agents have to earn their living and commission is part of their income.

They still earn their commission, its just that the landlord pays the full amount instead of half.

OK, I'll try that the next time - thanks for the information.
