We would like to buy a 3-4 year old BMW X3 this week. Two of my local colleagues told me that the price should be no more than HK$200K. We saw 15+ X3s priced by dealers around HK$300K-HK$380K i.e. we would need to get a 30%-45% discount of the typical ask price for such a car.
I would appreciate any experience in negotiating for a car in Hong Kong, and what discount others have been able to get from the ask price. Thanks.

Hmm, I don't think your colleagues know exactly what type of car you are looking at. The cheapest I have seen is just under HK$260k for a 2.5 and that is a private sale with high mileage. Dealer prices are around the HK$300k+.

Thanks for the feedback. It's really a buyer's market. Two dealers already offered 12% and 15% on the phone. I'll continue to shop around. I don't think I need to rush with 30+ similar cars on the market, some unsold for over 6 months. Apparently prices tend to go down further around the end of the year.

I would't buy an X3, the residual value on them stink. Take your $250K buy an older X5 with 3.0 engine and your depreciation per year will be less than the X3. And there are tons of X5's to choose from. Furthermore, if you can wait a few more weeks, the HSI will tank further so you will likely be in a buyers market and get 15-20% off asking.

I do not agree to buy X3 and X5 , most problem of BMW that after 6 years the gear box near to check , many garage are not willing to check even BMW garage !
Highly recommended Lexus RX300 or RX350 , i believed that you get one in 2004 to 2005 around $200K , good car and cheap parts to fix , most important reliable !
But in Asiaxpat there was a X3 for $345K in 2008 , good price because for new car cost $550K.
