i'm feeling rather stressed and just wondered if there is someone out there that can help
have a little boy just started a new school P1 and has had to make new friends, found it hard to settle and was unkind to some of the boys and girls to begin with
He has his party coming up ina few days. We invited wht whole class 25 kids and only 5 can make it. Others have said they have commitments - I feel really bad for my kid
Not sure what to do - should I re-arrange the party for another time so more kids can come? He is expecting a big party.

If he is expecting a big party, re-arrange it.

Is it a birthday party or just a party to get to know everyone? IF it's a birthday party, then maybe you can have those friends over and tell him you will organise another, bigger party soon.
Or you could perhaps say to him that nearly everyone has plans that day and you will organise another date when more people can make it. Then give him the choice of what he wants to do. You need to choose your words to make it sound like he has the control and can choose what he wants to do. Have a small party now, or a large party later.
Perhaps you can send an email or a note to the parents asking what dates they are free and try to arrange it that way.

He is expecting a big party.
I spoke to him before he went to school today and explained that a lot of the kids can't make it - and asked him if he wanted his party now with a few kids or a big party later - he didn't really get it.
My only concern is that what if i do re-arrange and then face the same dilema and the real reason few children want to come is because he wasn't kind and hurt some of the kids.

keep it to the day it is, but maybe change what you were palnning to do, maybe think of a special outing that is more suited to just a few friends rather than games etc indoors. i.e. a day at the beach with a picnic, a trip to ocean park, always more fun if you've got friends with you. A trip to the cinema and a burger afterwards, a trip to a bowling alley, plus food etc.
