I'm not sure if I sent half of this aleardy, so apologies if this is a duplicate !
Anyway, I previously worked in Hong kong and left 4 years ago. I now have an offer to return. However, I have just found out that my previous firm may not have retained enough tax and that there may be some outstanding from that time. I have e mailed the tax office to ask them whether there is any and if so how much - and whether if I pay it they will allow me a new work permit, but I have not received a reply. Does anyone know their stance on this ? Is it an automatic bar or will the immigration dept issue a work permit subject to the payment of any tax arrears ?
Thanks !

Thanks Lehman I understand that, but I was told that they would sort it.
I have been told of people being stopped at customs because of outstanding tax - so surely they must share information ?

Obtain legal advice to be of the safe side as it is my understanding that they do share information and that if one has an outstanding tax bill it can indeed keep you out of Hong Kong.

Lehmn, that's not necessarily correct.
It sounds like RealMadRidd previous employer pays his taxes for him, and does his taxes for him as part of his remuneration package... not uncommon in Hong Kong.

Thanks for the replies. Yes I did know that the obligation was personal but relied on them to do what they said they would. It may be that I ddn't owe much and I would of course pay it (the Revenue haven't replied to me yet). My main concern is whether they will veto my work permit application if I cannot get it sorted before I they receive my application, or if any previous arrears would lead to an automatic veto. It was never my intention to 'do a runner' !
