Every morning, as I wait for the mini bus, I see people driving solo off to work. Would one of these empty cars want to give me a ride to Central? I would like a ride to Causeway Bay for around 9:00. If you've got room in your car as you head from Sai Kung to Central, I would really appreciate you helping me avoiding the MTR. Thanks.

The minibus to Prince Edward mtr is about 20min or less, depending on traffic and how insanely fast the minibus driver goes.
I think the car pooling idea is a good one - I see so many solo drivers going to work in the morning - wonder if any of them care about cutting their gas costs and car pooling?

There's also a devilishly hard to find Minibus going from Sai Kung to Causeway Bay, but I have yet to see it go by in the morning. Methinks it's a mirage or conspiracy. Does anyone know when/where this red-topped minibus to CWB departs?

car pooling works well if you can find someone to do it. My husband car pools with 3 other to the airport. They each put in x amount per week for petrol, running costs etc, and split any repairs 4 ways. If anyone needs the car on the weekends they they get to use it.

I have tried car pooling in the past and the experience was good in the main part. However it gets complicated of you have to change plans due to commitments (like early meetings, school appointments, business trips, holidays or sickness) and you are the driver.
It is also tricky if the people with whom you car pool are not time sensitive as I found that I ended up waiting for them and then being late for work myself, after getting them thier on time!
I am sure many of us would like to share the expenses of driving, but the practicalities are better sorted out first.

Many years ago (more than a decade) a friend of mine lived in Happy Valley and they had a taxi stand where all the cabs would do a cab pool - the person at the front of the line would annouce they were going to Central, WanChai or wherever and anyone else in the line could share.
The driver would split the fare, meaning he got his a bit more than he would have done taking one person to Central and everyone paid overall a little less than they would have if they took a cab alone - so everyone was happy.
I think this is the only example of a win win, I can think of in Hong Kong and it would work beautifully for red taxi's (or green for that matter) coming out of Sai Kung for people who did not want to go by MTR (or wanted to go to Hang Hau/Choi Hung) or had variable schedules etc.
I guess someone needs to convince the Taxi Drivers, before everyone starts car pooling and they lose lots of business.
You never know, they said they would not to a park and ride at Choi Hung 10+ years ago "because there was no call for it" and there is one now, so maybe they will finally listen and start a bus route to the Island - there are several from Ma On Shan now...I understand that and a request for a ferry has been on the books for more than 15 years

This is a 3-year-old thread, but anyway:
I live in Ho Chung New Village (Marina Cove), Saikung, and leave daily 830 am for Sheu Key Wan in Hong Kong. The drive takes about 35 min. Would like to find one or two riders for a little gas money. call 63231102 for Ms. Sun. Speaks English/Mandarin
