Anyone have suggestions on which company to go with for prepaid mobile (SIM only)?
I'll want it for the first few months after I arrive and will be making mostly calls within HK. I'm looking at Vodafone and Orange but I'm sure there are others?

When my friends coming visiting, they all get their sim cards from Smartone. Must be very reliable!!

Smartone is usually a good option and good coverage. Orange - arrrrr. People - is cheaper but you consider the coverage. All depends all how important is the mobile coverage means to you. Mobile service in Hong Kong (calling locally) is rather cheap compare to other countries. Phone card is more for visitors & very low usage people.

Thanks altro! Have you not had a good experience with orange? I will need to get a prepaid (I think) because I won't have a job or permanent address when I first arrive, so don't want to be attached to a contract and not sure if I could get one anyway!

Well, understand your point re contract.
PCCW (1010 service, not their cheapline 1-2-3 though) is OK, so as Smartone, surely Orange - I won't consider, unless you want that 3G thingy. In any case the mobile service is cheap in here (for local calling). Good luck & welcome to HKG.
