Piano sound/noise proof tip

My daughter and I take piano lessons, and I am seriously starting to think I should do something about the sound we create. We live on the 4th floor and the last thing I want to do is give trouble to a nice old couple who lives just below us.

What's the best thing to do? Sound-proof carpet, cork mat, maybe both, perhaps industrial strength rubber mat that you put under machinery? Anyone who knows what the best solution is, could you please tell me where I can get it, too?

Our windows are brand new and closes properly with no gap etc., so our main concern is people below us. I also asked our next door neighbor, they said they don't hear a thing.

Thank you!

Hi turtlehead. It's really nice to know someone cares about noise.

Just from what my piano teacher in another country told me about etiquette

The basics

1. the piano not touching any surface - wall, thick carpet under the piano

2. thick curtians for the window and the curtians to be closed when playing. (even better if the window is a double glass)

3. piano not close to the window.

4. limit the hours when the piano is going to be played and notify the neighbor. ie from 11am to 9pm. or ask the neighbor what their life cycle will be, ie, will they take a nap? what time do they go to bed, and adjust.

Either than that, I remember that I had little noise swallowing feet caps on the 4 legs of the piano and a thick rug between the wall and the piano as well.

I hear that modern technology has made a sheet for grand pianos that the sheet absorbs the frequency.

I am sorry, I cannot help you as to where you can get these in HK and as I practice on electronic piano now but, just by doing the basics hopefully will reduce noise!!

good luck!!

I wish you were my neighour! We have a piano playing child next door that will play constantly from early afternoon to anywhere around 10.30pm at night and then above us we have a child playing the trumpet!!! AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!! Luckily he doesn't play into the evenings.

Definitely go with the thick rug as it will certainly dull the noise. Most pianos come with a pedal to quieten the noise slightly, although when learning it is best to hear the playing clearly.

As everyone has said above, it's great that you would think of others. Now we just need to convey this to the rest of Hong Kong!
