urgent - going to my first funeral

Assuming it's a Chinese funeral.....the money should be placed in a white envelope and the starting number is a odd number ie $300, $500,$1000 not $200,$400 etc.

Depending on the financial situation of the deceased a reasonable sum is $500.

As for flowers, the florist will be able to help.Normally Chinese will go for white or pale colors .

Hope that helps.

Don't you have any mutual friends....ask them and if it's reasonable, do what they do. There are a lot of flower shops near the funeral parlour - just order from there and if you want to give money, ask the receptionist at the counter inside the funeral parlour to give you an envelope to put your money in.

If you personally know the deceased and were close then send flowers via a florist; note that it is a Chinese funeral since the floral arrangements are different. You should also include a "white envelope" with sums in an odd number, but I was always told to add $1 coin.

If the relation to the deceased is more indirect, then a "white envelope" only would be what is expected. You would not be expected to send flowers.

More Chinese are asking for donations to charity in lieu of flowers, so you should check on this point prior to sending any flowers.
