Too old to be a NET?

I'm trying to find part time work as a NET but am having no luck. I do not have experience or a TEFL qualification, but I am only applying for posts that say these aren't necessary. I have not had even one acknowledgement, let alone an interview, and I'm wondering if it's because of my age, I'm 49! has anyone else had this problem? I'm thinking of doing a TEFL qualification but I'm reluctant to spend the money if it isn't going to help me find work.

Hi Phillippa,

I've been working as a NET in HK for the past 2 years almost and although some places will say they don't want TEFL they will take people who have it over those who don't.It's just a thing they look for and not much reflection on a teachers ability. I came out here having done a weekend TEFL combined with online, through a company called 'i to i', from what I can remember. Some of the bigger companies may want certain TEFL qualifications and kindergartens usually some kind of teaching cert. It seems kinda silly to say,as I'm sure this is thne case already but make sure your cv is gleaming and you submit a nice cover note. Play up your other qualifictions etc.I'm an artist, with all my qualifcations in that area but still found work.Of course things are slowing down now so may make it a little harder.Don't despair, age is only a number, plus I'm sure some centres value more mature staff members.Do look into some kind of TEFL though.

hope this helps!

My husband is a qualified TEFL teacher (46) and is having a problem finding full-time employment. The few jobs he's chased have been low 15k and high 19k for a six-day week and long hours. I'm trying to encourage him to work privately but he can't figure out how to start this off. Beerboy, how does your friend source his students? We live in Mid-Levels and obviously not trying to elbow our way into anyone's existing business :)

Thank you

Visa requirements though ...wouldn't you have to have the right to work here without sponsorship to work privately?

Wow, at 27,000 a month I'd gladly give up my full time post! Fiona and Steve I think 19k is standard for full time, considered even a decent wage, though for a 5 day week, which may need to be bargained as most places try to push you into 6.

Thanks beerboy and edelg :)

My hubby is enjoying the interaction with the local school kids and this is a great way for him to start out. I always wanted him to go into private tutoring and the centre approach was last resort but he's been slow off the mark getting started so that at least would get him employed without having to shop around to find students.

I think I may have convinced him to put a notice on the board at the supermarket and drop a little flyer into the letterboxes in our apartment building - Mid-Levels but a very local building.

Thanks everyone!

Fiona

Thanks for all your advice. I will keep trying, get a TEFL qualification and try to get private work in the meantime. At least the thing I have no control over (my age) isn't the obstacle!
