Applying to schools EARLY

ORIGINAL POST

My son is now 4.5 months, and people have been asking whether we have submitted applications to schools for him.

We are happy enjoying these early months with our son, but the pressure is on..

However, according to my research, what the schools' websites say is that they do not accept applications until 1 year prior to admission.

If this is the case, it seems like we still have some time. What is the fuss about applying so early, anyway, especially when the schools are not accepting the applications? Or do people send the applications in anyway? And does it help?

Am quite baffled and confused about this.....

For ESF schools you can only apply in the September before the calendar year that the child turns 5 years old. For other non-ESF schools international schools, you can submit applications from birth.

yes, i know that about ESF. some non-ESF also have the same policy. of the ones i looked into, ISF also doe not accept applications until 1 year prior to the starting year.

what about for playgroups and kindergarten? do they take applications early? i'm thinking of sending my son to playgroups at around 1.5 years of age.

The kindergartens I checked out also had the same policy. Applications are accepted one year prior to starting year. I doubt any one takes applications ealier than that. If you have decided on the kindy you want then check out their policy too.

this is why i am a little confused as to why people make a big fuss about applying to schools so early. it seems to me that only a handful of schools will take early applications.

also, in looking at playgroups/kindergartens, i am not understanding the difference between 'montessori' and 'woodland montessori'. can anyone shed light on this matter?

I heard that if you want to get into Kingston, you have to register the moment your baby is born.

lasez, thank you for your comment. i am indeed very interested in kingston, and i called them to ask about the admission. they accept applications early and their waitlist is obviously very long. i'm going to send the application in.

yes, cara. i have also sent application to canadian international.

so, woodland montessori is part of the woodland group that teaches montessori style, i assume? i also found information on the web about Montessori School of HK. is this a good school?

we applied to Kingston when our daughter was 8 months old...when I went to their open day last month and told the teachers that my daughter would be joining in 2010, they all had a very surprised response that we had applied so early...i'm very impressed by the school, ratio, bilingual program and prep for PYP...

funbobby,

thanks for ur comments on kingston. we submitted our application this week for 2010 class when my son turns 2 years old. i know that they also have classes for 1 year olds, but i don't want to send my son to these places at that age.

we haven't done the visits yet, so it is very good to hear that you find the school impressive.

ur daughter is also applying for 2010? we might cross paths if both our babies get accepted!
