it's my daughter's 12th birthday. some people think she's too young to have her own computer and it will spoil her. if we control the time she's on it, do you think it is ok? she can use ours but she has her fight with a younger sibling to get to it.

Personally I think she is too young, but I'm probably old fashioned in some respects. My oldest daughter had to wait until her 18th birthday before she got a laptop, as she was going off to uni. We have 2 computers next to each other in the playroom, one for us, and one for the kids. That way we know how long they spend on it, and to a certain extent what they do on it. I remember when my daughter started secondary school here, we had to go to a talk, and one of the things they told us was to take TV's and computers out of the kids bedrooms...

Hmm, i don't know, I'm about to give my 13 yr-old son our old computer after upgrading to a new one.
He's had a lot of research to do on the internet in the past 2 years at school, and is constantly hogging it.
I do worry about the amount of time on the computer (not to mention the contents!) as much as I did about game boy and Playstation when he was younger.
You do need to be very careful in your supervision, I think, even with a good parental control software.

I'm with you cd, too early. At that age, I will let her surf the net but under my supervision and she'll have to ask me for the password.
