Termperature in Babies room

ORIGINAL POST

I have just been reading something from the UK where they say to reduce SIDS (cot death) your babies room should be 16-20C.

We are in Singapore and run our air con at about 27C as otherwise it feels too cold and the outside temp becomes unbearable as there is too much difference between indoors and outdoors.

Does anyone have any information that is more local? What temp do most set their air con to in babies room? Or do you just run the fan?

As for us, we set our a/c in the summer at ~22-23C. Fall/Winter we keep it ~20, and adjust clothes/grobag instead. I also agree with cara, 27C is waaay too hot and just wondering, does the a/c even get cool? Kids tend to sleep better when its cooler.

I am not sure that I could afford your electricity bill ;-) we already pay nearly HKD 4000 per month for electricity and that is running just a few aircons at 27 or 26 for a few hours each day + our household stuff. My daughter 6 yrs old has her air con on for just a few hours while she goes to sleep and then we switch it off. Guess I will wait till baby arrives and see how things go with running her room cooler than rest of house. I did find someone else on this site, also in Sng saying they run at 25, so maybe it is just the norm here. I agree that I ran mine a lot cooler in HK, but even being pregnant here I find just the fan is enough most nights.

$4000/mo. for your elec bill seems high specially if you're only running the a/c for a few hrs a day, and at 27C too! In the summer we have the a/c on 24hrs. and our bill is only around $2500-3000. Plus it is winter now in HK and the weather is much cooler so don't need any a/c at all. We just regulate the temp from the windows. Of course Singapore may still be warm at this time, but you might also need to check if anything's wrong with your a/c.

I agree . . . but then she's still running it at only 27C! But anyway we're getting besides the main point, so do try to keep temp much lower than 27C. Also, invest in a good thermo/hygrometer to see exactly what's the temp/humidity in the room.

just to clarify our electricity useage we are in a large house which has a lot of gaps round doors and the like so I am sure we are not the most efficient of users of air con anyway. Singapore climate is quite different to HK - we just dont get a break from the heat basically. So even in our "cool" season which is we are sitting at 27 -30 and in the hot season which is about 8 months of the year we are at 32-36.

thanks for the redirect to other messages on this site - most seem to suggest 23-25C is ok.

23-25C is ok but for younger babies they do recommend 18-20C (seems to be better anti SIDs measure). My 2.5 yr olds sleep in 23 C at the moment - but i used to make sure it was at 20C when they were younger..
